This post is brought you by Gundam 00 Diver from Gundam Build Divers as I promised you that I’ll be showing you my Top 5 picks for the best sequels in 2017.

Yes, it’s been too long and due to real-life commitments, I haven’t created a post until now so here it is.

05. Symphogear AXZ

Let’s start things off with Symphogear AXZ and I have to say that things have escalated quickly with the arrival of an Illuminati-like organization, which the Symphogear users will have to deal with them both in the 4th season and in the upcoming 5th season.

On the other hand, I have to say that we have some interesting aspects from Symphogear AXZ such as having a closure to Maria Cadenzavna Eve’s tortured past, especially when dealing with Prof. Nastassja and Dr. Ver. Oh yeah, and we saw some characters paired up in unexpected ways like Tsubasa Kazanari teaming up with Shirabe Tsukuyomi. And lastly, I must say that the villains, especially the alchemists, are very sympathetic much like how Maria and her friends were treated back in Symphogear G. Too bad that Saint-Germain and her fellow alchemists sacrificed their lives to stop Adam Weishaupt from becoming a god. C’mon, it’ll be a great addition to the Symphogear users.

In any case, it’s a good season and it’s an improvement to Symphogear GX. Can’t wait for its sequel next year!

04. NEW GAME!!

Next up is NEW GAME!! where Aoba Suzukaze has finally stepped up the ladder within Eagle Jump by becoming an artist to their latest game PECO. While there will be one person moving up the ladder, another one will leave Eagle Jump as Kou Yagami will go overseas to work at a video game studio in France. We’ll sure gonna miss Kou Yagami.

Other characters made their mark too such as Nene Sakura getting hired as a programmer, Hifumi Takimoto succeeding Kou-san’s position as a lead character designer, and interns showing their stuff such as Momiji Mochizuki and Tsubame Narumi.

Anyways, it’s a great 2nd season for NEW GAME! and I’m hoping that there would be more in the future if there’s more material from the manga that Dogakobo can adapt them.

03. Sangatsu no Lion 2nd Season

Moving onto 3rd Place is Sangatsu no Lion as the second season is quite interesting, especially when dealing with bullying. It’s a touchy subject that most people, including myself, has experienced it in the past.

Anyways, I have to say that Hinata Kawamoto stood up against the bullies who hurt Chiho Sakura and with the help from her fellow sisters and friends like Rei Kiriyama and Yuusuke Takahashi, she managed to stay strong instead of breaking down against Megumi Takagi and her posse. Then again, Megumi is kinda unapologetic in my opinion. But hey, Hina-chan has a bright future as she enrolls to Komahashi High School in which she’ll join Rei Kiriyama. Let’s hope that there’s no bullying during her high school years.

Speaking of Rei Kiriyama, it appears that he’s starting to reconnect with his estranged foster family even though Kyouko Kouda still has a love-hate relationship with Rei-kun. But you know what, I feel that Rei Kiriyama is in the right direction not only his relationship with the Kouda family, but also his shogi career. Let’s hope that in the next season, there would be some improvements from Kiriyama if NHK funded Studio Shaft to create another one.

02. My Hero Academia Season 2

My runner-up for the best sequel of 2017 is none other than My Hero Academia and really, Izuku Midoriya has improved a lot from the first season. Even though he’s not the winner during U.A. High School’s sports festival, Deku took various risks to go toe-to-toe against Shouto Todoroki. Eventually, Deku’s experience from the sports festival and his internship with Gran Torino has got Midoriya stronger, which culminates on his victory against the Hero Killer Stain together with Tenya Iida and Shouto Todoroki.

I have to admit but damn, My Hero Academia Season 2 was the biggest leap from the first season in which Izuku “Deku” Midoriya and the rest of Hero Class 1-A has improved a lot. Well, except for Katsuki Bakugou in which he acts like a jerkass even though he won the sports festival. But you know what, it’s a good thing that their improvement is very crucial, especially when the League of Villains are ramping up their bad deeds ever since Stain came into the picture. While I’m hoping that currently-aired Season 3 will surpass the previous one, Season 2 is my favorite from My Hero Academia.

01. Love Live! Sunshine!! Season 2

Lastly, my No. 1 pick for the best sequel of 2017 goes to Love Live! Sunshine!! Yeah, it’s no surprise there considering that it’s a major improvement over the first season like showing some other characters like the Kurosawa Sisters, Yoshiko “Yohane” Tsushima and Riko Sakurauchi, and Saint Snow in which they collaborated with Aqours. Of course, the biggest draw to this second season is the drama in which Uranohoshi Girls’ Academy will be closed down after not meeting 100 students that’ll be enrolled for the next school year. But hey, the best ending is that Aqours won the Love Live! School Idol tournament in which Uranohoshi will be remembered in the history books.

Anyways, I have nothing to say about Season 2 ’cause it far exceeds Season 1 in terms of story and it has more weight due to Chika Takami and the rest of Aqours dealing with their beloved school getting consolidated by a bigger one in Numazu. Apart from showing other characters not getting the love comparing to the first season, everything feels like a finale to Aqours’ story… until the movie that is!

And that my friends is my Top 5 picks for Best Sequel Anime in 2017! Now if you excuse me, I have to wrap up Spring 2018 before moving onto Summer 2018…
